LTI 1.3 and EASEC: Embedding Competency Assessment Directly in Your Learning Platform

LTI × EASEC Alignment

About this framework

LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability) is the 1EdTech Consortium standard that allows learning management systems to integrate external tools and content securely and seamlessly. It enables a student to launch an external assessment, complete it, and have the result returned to the LMS gradebook — all without leaving the learning platform or logging in separately.

Why LTI 1.3 Matters

Every university, business school and corporate learning department uses a learning management system — Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L Brightspace, Google Classroom, or one of dozens of others. When an institution wants to add an external tool — an assessment platform, a simulation, a content library — the integration process has traditionally been a costly, bespoke development project.

LTI eliminates this barrier. It provides a standardised protocol that allows any LTI-compatible tool to connect with any LTI-compatible platform, using the same interface regardless of which specific systems are involved. The current version, LTI 1.3, uses OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect for authentication, replacing the less secure model of earlier versions, and supports a suite of services collectively known as LTI Advantage.

LTI Advantage includes three key services: Assignment and Grade Services (automatic grade passback from the tool to the LMS gradebook), Deep Linking (enabling teachers to browse and select specific content within the tool and link it directly into course modules) and Names and Role Provisioning Services (securely sharing enrolment data so the tool knows who is in the course).

Adoption note

LTI is the most widely adopted interoperability standard in education technology. Major LMS providers including Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, D2L and Google Classroom all support LTI 1.3. The 1EdTech TrustEd Apps Directory lists hundreds of certified LTI-compatible tools. For institutions, this means any tool that is LTI 1.3 certified can be integrated without custom development — a configuration process, not a coding project.

Integration flow

How LTI 1.3 Works

The integration follows a straightforward flow:

Step What happens
  • Configuration

    Step 01

The institution's LMS administrator registers the external tool by exchanging security credentials (public keys, client IDs, deployment IDs). This is a one-time setup.

  • Launch

    Step 02

When a student clicks a link to the external tool within the LMS, a secure message is sent from the platform to the tool, authenticating the user and providing course context. The student accesses the tool without a separate login.

  • Interaction

    Step 03

The student completes the activity within the tool — in EASEC's case, a competency assessment. The experience can be embedded within the LMS interface or launched in a new window, depending on configuration.

  • Result return

    Step 04

When the activity is complete, the tool sends the result back to the LMS gradebook via Assignment and Grade Services. The instructor sees the score alongside other course assessments without manual data entry.

Security

The entire flow is secured by the 1EdTech Security Framework, which uses OAuth 2.0 for authentication and JSON Web Tokens for message signing — the same security standards used by major internet platforms.

How EASEC Integrates via LTI 1.3

EASEC's competency assessment instruments are designed for LTI 1.3 integration, enabling institutions to embed EASEC assessments directly within their existing learning platform.

What the Integration Delivers

01
For students

Seamless in-LMS experience

The EASEC competency assessment launches from within the LMS — the same environment they use for all their coursework. No separate registration, no separate login, no external platform to navigate. They complete the assessment and the result appears in their course gradebook.

02
For instructors

Automatic gradebook sync

EASEC assessment results flow back to the LMS gradebook automatically via Assignment and Grade Services. Instructors can see competency assessment scores alongside academic performance data, giving a complete picture of student achievement without manual data reconciliation.

03
For administrators

Configuration, not development

The integration requires configuration, not development. An LMS administrator registers EASEC as an LTI tool provider using standard credentials — a process that typically takes less than an hour. No server infrastructure, no API development, no ongoing maintenance.

The Credential Flow

When a student completes an EASEC assessment via LTI and achieves certification, the credential issuance process follows automatically.

Outcome

The LMS receives the score; the student receives the credential. Both happen in a single, integrated workflow.

1

Result validation

The assessment result is validated against the EASEC proficiency framework.

2

Credential structuring

The credential is structured with ESCO, EQF and O*NET metadata.

3

Dual issuance

Issued simultaneously as a European Digital Credential (to the student's Europass wallet) and an Open Badge 3.0 (to the student's professional profile).

Compatible Platforms

EASEC's LTI 1.3 integration is compatible with any LMS that supports the LTI 1.3 specification. Institutions do not need to change or upgrade their LMS to integrate EASEC assessments.

For you

What This Means for You

For Universities and Business Schools

Adding EASEC competency assessment to your programme does not require a technology project. If your LMS supports LTI 1.3 — which virtually all modern LMS platforms do — your IT team can configure the integration in under an hour. Students assess their competencies within the same environment where they attend lectures, submit assignments and receive grades.

For Corporate Learning Departments

Integrating EASEC into your corporate LMS means employees can complete competency assessments as part of their existing learning pathway — no separate platform, no additional login, no disruption to established workflows. Results flow to the system your L&D team already uses for tracking and reporting.

For EdTech Partners

If you operate a learning platform and want to offer EASEC competency certification as part of your product offering, LTI 1.3 provides the standard integration pathway. EASEC operates as the tool provider; your platform operates as the consumer. The integration is standard, certified and maintained.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About LTI 1.3

LTI 1.3 (Learning Tools Interoperability) is the 1EdTech Consortium standard for integrating external tools with learning management systems. It provides secure launch, user authentication and grade passback using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, enabling tools and platforms from different providers to work together without custom development.
All major LMS platforms support LTI 1.3, including Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Google Classroom and Sakai. The 1EdTech TrustEd Apps Directory maintains a current list of certified platforms and tools.
Configuration typically takes less than an hour. An LMS administrator registers EASEC as an LTI tool provider by exchanging security credentials — no custom coding, no server infrastructure, no ongoing maintenance required.
No. LTI 1.3 handles authentication seamlessly. The student launches the EASEC assessment from within their LMS, completes it, and the result returns to the gradebook — all without creating a separate account or logging in separately.
Yes. EASEC uses LTI Advantage Assignment and Grade Services to pass assessment results directly to the LMS gradebook. Instructors see EASEC competency scores alongside other course grades without manual data entry.
LTI 1.1 used an older security model (OAuth 1.0a with shared secrets) that is now formally deprecated by 1EdTech. LTI 1.3 uses OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect and JSON Web Tokens — the same security standards used by major internet platforms. Institutions still running LTI 1.1 integrations should plan migration to 1.3 as a security remediation priority.
